On the road for its season opener, the Washington Spirit defeated the Houston Dash 2-1.  After the match, Head Coach Jonatan Giráldez, midfielder Chloe Ricketts, and forward Makenna Morris spoke with the media.

Jonatan Giráldez, Head Coach

On the game as a whole:
In general, we did not have a good game in possession, but we have to be happy because we got important three points … I think we had the space and time to play more passes … We won, we got an important three points, and we started very well the game scoring two early goals, but the room for improvement that we have in possession is big.

On Croix Bethune being available on the bench:
One of the most important things when you are coming back is to be with the team, travel with team, be in the dressing room, in the meeting before the game, in halftime. Spending time with the team is an important first step done. Now let’s see how it’s going on the week to try and give them some minutes … We need to try to get Croix back as soon as possible because we know how important she is for the team.

On Rebeca Bernal:
For me, it’s very important that she has this type of versatility to play in different positions … We know the she can play in both positions with the [Mexican] national team … She’s a leader. She’s very intense, she defends pretty well. We have to help her because we know that she is going to help us a lot during the season.

On playing away from Audi Field:

We know how difficult it is, especially on away games. Last season we won a lot of games at home, but we needed to improve the performance playing away. We have to be happy because last week we won the Challenge Cup playing away against Orlando and this week starting the season against Houston … It was important to get another three points, so we know if we can maintain the level playing at home, then we are going to win a lot of games, but if we improve the level playing away, for sure we are going to do a better season [than 2024].

Chloe Ricketts, Midfielder & Makenna Morris,

On pressing:

Morris: Going into the game, it was something we wanted to do, to press them. I think we have the players and the ability to do that … That’s how the two goals came … I think just sticking with the game plan helped us a lot. I think all offseason we were working on high press.

On Ricketts playing on the left rather than center:

Ricketts: Honestly, I just like playing so anywhere is fine with me. I think maybe on the left it’s less running which I love. I like both positions.

On Morris’ goal:
Morris: I was pretty excited for myself and for the team. It just king of brought back to last year scoring goals and just being back with the team, being back on the field. It’s

On the Spirit’s mentality after giving up a goal:

Morris: We always want to walk away with a win. That’s the goal going into every game. I think it’s just bouncing back. We’re going to have moments where we give up a goal or maybe something doesn’t go our way, so I think it’s just sticking together, bouncing back from those moments and continuing to move forward … I think our defense did a really good job and everyone else helped out on defense as well.
