First-year player Courtney Brown was selected with the 49th overall pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft. The Utah native spent five seasons with the Utah Utes, appearing in 94 matches (90 starts), scoring 15 goals and adding 15 assists. Brown was recognized on the 2023 CSC Academic All-District team and was a member of the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll four times. In her first season, Brown has made an impact, starting several matches and scoring her first career goal against Gotham FC on June 23.
What was your first thought when you were drafted?
I was super super, super, super excited and super grateful. It was almost an out of body experience, like ‘Holy crap, I’ve thought about this for so long and now it’s finally happening. I don’t know how to act.’ I was just so excited and so shocked, honestly. I was with my parents, my brother and my husband. There were a lot of tears — my mom cried.
What is your all-time dream starting XI?
I got a 4-3-3 formation. I am putting Aubrey (Kingsbury) in goal. Center backs, I am putting Wendie Renard (Lyon) and let’s put Becky Sauerbrunn (Portland Thorns). At the six, I’ll go Julie Ertz. Outside backs – Emily Fox (Arsenal) and Kelley O’Hara (Gotham FC). Rose Lavelle (Gotham FC) is in the 10, the other midfield spot I’m putting Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona) there. On the front line, I’ll go Ada Hegerberg (Lyon). For the wings, I’ll do Linda Caicedo (Real Madrid) and the other one I am doing Trin (Rodman).
What is your first soccer memory?
My first soccer memory is playing in AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) and scoring so many goals for my team that the other team would get so sad that they would make me trade teams at half time so that I could score against my team and make it even.
Did you play any other sports?
I ran track and I played basketball.
What was your first concert?
My first concert was One Direction – I’m a Harry Styles girl. I used to be, at least – I had a poster of him in my room. Another early concert was LANY, a band out of California. I’ve been to two of their shows. I’ve also been to Post Malone. And me and some teammates saw Kenny Chesney at Commanders Field the other day.
What is your favorite way to spend an off day?
Fly fishing! It started because (my husband) Cam fly fished his whole life. We dated all through high school, so I got into it, too. We fish together now. We go a lot of times in the evening after training. We got a lot. He’s way better, but I still catch a lot of fish.
What is the coolest place you have been fly fishing
I’ll tell you, but I can’t tell anyone else because it is my secret spot: [Top-secret, undisclosed location in Idaho]. Fishermen are secretive about their spots – I can’t be giving that away.
What is the biggest fish you’ve ever caught?
I’ve caught a 23-inch Cuttie – Cutthroat trout.
What’s always in your fridge?
Strawberries and blueberries.
Do you have pets?
Two cats back at home at my parents’ house, Max and Sam. We aren’t entirely sure how old they are, but Max is probably nine and Sam is probably seven.
What is a skill you’ve always wanted to learn?
Tennis. I think tennis is so cool, and in another life I would be a tennis player. I don’t even watch a ton of tennis, but the idea of it is so cool to me.
Do you have a favorite tennis player?
Coco Gauff.
Favorite food?
My mom’s spaghetti! I love spaghetti, and she makes it with love. It’s meat sauce and Prego, but my mom makes it the best. Just normal spaghetti noodle. But no cheese.
What career highlight are you most proud of so far?
I scored a nice free kick goal against UCLA to tie up the game when I was a junior. It was a banger with my left foot. I am right footed, but I took it with my left foot. I think they were ranked really high, and we ended up tying that game off of my goal.
One word to describe this team?
Talented.
