Boyds, Md. (7/20/19) – The Washington Spirit will take on the Houston Dash this weekend at the Maryland SoccerPlex following the team’s longest road stretch of the season. [TICKETS]
When the Spirit last played Houston on June 22 the Dash were one of the most consistently inconsistent teams in the NWSL. Since that game, Houston has gone on one of the longest winless streaks in the league this season, as they have not won a game since May 5, 75 days ago. One of the biggest reasons for Houston’s slide has been their defense.
The Dash have allowed the 2nd most goals in the league with 19. Of the 19 total goals the Dash allowed this season, eight have been scored in the last three games. Houston welcomes the return of the Dash’s three World Cup defenders, two of whom played in the Dash’s most recent game against the Red Stars where they only allowed one goal.
The Spirit continue to hold a top-four spot on the NWSL ladder. A win on Saturday would be a huge three points for the club moving forward, allowing them to jump Reign FC for third place in the NWSL.
Last Saturday the Spirit fell 4-3 to the Orlando Pride despite a fantastic team offensive effort that saw the Spirit tie a season-high three goals. Goals from Bayley Feist, Cheyna Matthews and Jordan DiBiasi highlighted the rain-delayed evening in Orlando.
The Spirit are hosting the club’s first-ever First Responders Night against the Dash. First Responders will be honored at halftime with a video and serve as the Color Guard for the game-opening. A full list of events can be viewed here.
In addition to First Responders Night, all six Spirit players who participated in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be present for the first time this season. All World-Cup players will be available post-game to sign autographs and will be honored postgame for their outstanding achievements during the World Cup.
Kickoff at the Maryland SoccerPlex is set for 7:00 p.m. ET, with Gate D and the Fan Zone opening at 5:30 p.m. ET for all ticket-holding fans. [TICKETS]
