Boyds, Md. (5/17/19) – Washington Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle started and scored for the United States Women’s National Team in their second match of the “Send-Off Series” against New Zealand at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. The U.S. came out on top 5-0 on Thursday night.

Lavelle scored the US’s second goal of the night in the 40th minute with a challenging first-time half-volley following a cross from Lindsay Horan on the left side, punching the ball into the back of the net with her left foot. Lavelle has now scored seven goals with the U.S. from a midfield position. Lavelle made her 25th appearance for the USWNT on Thursday night, with 6 caps thus far in 2019, including 4 starts.

Spirit forward Mallory Pugh also made an appearance in the game as a substitute in the 72nd minute, coming on for forward Alex Morgan. It was Pugh’s 52nd appearance for the USWNT, and her ninth appearance of 2019. Pugh has played in every game for the U.S. this year.

The friendly between the Stars and Stripes and the Football Ferns was played in front of a crowd of over 34,000, the largest attendance for a domestic friendly since these two sides last met in 2017 when just over 30,000 saw the USA beat New Zealand 5-0 in Cincinnati.

Tonight’s match was also the first time the U.S. played in a baseball stadium since 2015, also at Busch Stadium against New Zealand in a 4-0 win.

Thus far the USA has posted a 6-1-2 record so far in 2019 with all but one of those games coming against World Cup-bound teams. The U.S. has now extended its’ home win streak to 32 games (28-0-4) and outscored their opponents 14-0 in the last three matches.

The US’ next and final match in the “Send-Off Series” and final fixture before the beginning of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, will come against Mexico on May 26.
