Spirit Nation:
Day 5 started with a meeting with the Qatar Supreme Committee, members of the US Embassy to Qatar, members of the Qatar Embassy to the USA and the Qatar Football Association. We discussed a range of topics including:
- Human Rights
- Worker Welfare Programs
- Worker Welfare Standards
- External Review and Reporting
- Recruitment Fees
- Worker Development Programs
I should note that from the first time I met His Excellency Ambassador Al Thani, we have had conversations on these topics.
Twenty-four months ago when I became the Majority Owner of the Spirit, I introduced myself to you by saying we were going to think bigger. Part of that includes thinking differently. Be assured that the North Star that guides our work today is the same North Star that has guided us the past 24 months. We are going to elevate women, we are going to impact the lives of more kids and we welcome everyone.
I could not be more proud of Tori, Aubrey, Paige, Sam, Dorian and our Chief Communications Officer Nicole Hawkins for their work and participation in this trip. The meeting with the Qatar Supreme Committee was an important social discussion and they shined.
Next, we toured the Museum of Islamic Art and saw numerous artifacts, some more than 1000 years old. After that, we went to the Qatar Foundation’s Multaqa (a multipurpose student center) and worked with children with special needs from the Qatar Foundation’s Ability Friendly Program and Best Buddies. During our time here, our players have brought smiles to the faces of many young people. After playing with the kids, the players signed autographs. The bigger highlight was when Sam Staab asked the kids to sign her T-shirt and the kids loved it.
We then went to the Souq Waqif, a traditional marketplace in Doha where we stopped for a bite and we were entertained by a talented and hilarious local magician. Be on the lookout for some fun videos of our magician friend.
We wrapped up day 5 with dinner where we were joined by US Ambassador Greta Holtz and members of her team, members of the Qatar Embassy to the US, Qatar Football Association General Secretary Mansoor Al-Ansari and Qatari composer Dana al Fardan.
