Boyds, Md., (7/26/20) – Washington Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle has been named to the NWSL Challenge Cup Best XI. The Best XI, which was announced at halftime of the Challenge Cup final between Chicago and Houston, was determined by a vote that polled the media, fans, players and coaches. This is Lavelle’s second straight Best XI honor after also being named to the 2019 NWSL Best XI.

After an impressive 2019 that saw Lavelle’s breakout as a star for the United States Women’s National Team, there were lofty expectations heading into the 2020 Challenge Cup. Things got off to a hot start for the Cincinnati native when just eight minutes into Washington’s first game against the Chicago Red Stars, Lavelle pounced on a rebound from an Ashley Hatch shot and buried it past Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to put the Spirit up 1-0.

Lavelle made four appearances in the Challenge Cup, starting two matches. While she finished with only one goal, Lavelle was a difference-maker for the Spirit on the field offensively, as she created three chances and made three key passes by distributing the ball well up to the forward line. Lavelle finished the tournament with a 78.4% passing rate, including a 100% success rate on long passes.
