In front of another sold-out crowd at Audi Field, the Washington Spirit came from behind to defeat the defending champion Gotham FC in the semifinals presented by Alarm.com.
Hal Hershfelt netted the equalizer off a free kick from Makenna Morris in stoppage time to force overtime. After two scoreless 15 minute periods, the match was destined for penalty kicks. Ashley Hatch, Lena Silano, and Tara McKeown all buried their shots in goal, and Aubrey Kingsbury stopped all three Gotham attempts to seal the victory and send the Spirit to the NWSL Championship.
The Washington Spirit earned a spot in the NWSL Semifinals with a 2-1 extra-time win over expansion side Bay FC. A goal late in the match from Bay forward Asisat Oshoala looked to be the game-winner, but Spirit defender Tara McKeown responded with her first goal of the season just four minutes later to force overtime.
In the 96th minute, the sold-out crowd erupted in celebration a Trinity Rodman cross in the box deflected off a Bay defender and into the back of the net.
