Dear Investors,
Today is an exciting day for DC. As we enter the break in play across the league, we are thrilled to share that Washington DC will host the 2026 NWSL Championship on November 21. The biggest match in our league comes to “Rowdy Audi”. The days leading to the finals will feature an NWSL Awards Show, Fan Festival, and Skills Challenge. A full week of soccer says everything about where the Spirit and DC stand.
On the pitch, we head into the June break in a strong position. We sit fourth on the table with 21 points. Our May 30th match against Seattle was a 2-1 victory in front of our 3rd sold-out crowd in 5 home matches this season. It was the highest-grossing match in Spirit history, surpassing our playoffs gates. The night reminded me how far this club has come.
The turnaround that brought us here is worth reflecting on. We started the season slow. The team found its footing in April with a perfect 3-0-0 month, a club-record four consecutive shutouts from goalkeeper Sandy MacIver, and our first win of the season on the road against Bay FC. That result launched a four-match winning streak and a climb into the top four. We have played fewer matches than everyone else because of our Concacaf W Champions Cup run.
Along the way we picked up an unlikely mascot, José the Coyote. What began as a lighthearted moment in a training session became something bigger. José became a fan phenomenon. Fans bought their own decoys. Dedicated merchandise flew off the shelves. His Instagram account captured the imagination of the soccer community. This is the kind of authentic, joyful story that reminds me why this club is special.
Off the pitch, our commercial momentum continues to be strong. In April, the NWSL confirmed we had the most successful kit launch in the league this year. Six of the eight top-selling jerseys league-wide are Spirit players. Trinity Rodman ranks first, with her individual sales up 136 percent year over year. Rodman also became the youngest player in NWSL history to reach 30 regular season goals and 20 assists. That milestone speaks to her brilliance and the caliber of this roster.
In May, we were honored to be finalists for Sports Business Journal’s 2026 Sports Team of the Year, the first NWSL club nominated since Angel City FC won the award in 2023. Nominees included the LA Dodgers, Inter Miami, Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Valkyries and 23XI Racing. While the honor went to the Dodgers, it is a meaningful reflection of how the broader sports industry views what we are building in DC, and we will continue to raise that bar.
We return home July 3rd against Houston and host an Open Training on June 21st to keep our fans close through the World Cup break. On July 15th we face our rivals Gotham at Citi Field, just four days before the World Cup Final in New York. The timing matters . The Men’s World Cup takes center stage on home soil this summer, and the country is tuned into soccer like never before. We are leaning into that moment and channeling the energy into the second half of our season.
The appetite for soccer in DC is real. The best is still ahead.
Go Spirit!
