Head Coach Brent Leiba on the team’s historic season:

“This season has been an extraordinary year for our program!  To be the first HBCU (Historically Black College and University) women’s soccer program to win both the regular season and conference tournament championships in a predominantly white conference has not just made this year’s achievements special but transcendent!  In result, my hope is that what we accomplished can be inspirational and show there are no limits to what you can achieve!  GO BISON!!”

Senior Captain Melea Early on what it meant to be a part of this championship-winning team:

“As a predominantly black team in a predominantly white conference winning a championship was a win not only for our team but for Howard as a whole. It showed that we were capable regardless of the limits others (whether it be schools or different teams) put upon us thinking that we couldn’t get the job done! I’m beyond proud of my team for not only figuring it out but also having fun and lifting each other up while doing so. I think this put us on the map for HBCU soccer as a whole. This shows that HBCUs deserves proper funding and resources to promote our team just as much as other schools. We had such a memorable season, and I was extremely grateful to be a part of this group! I love these girls, and they have had such a positive impact on my life and my college soccer career.”

Senior Captain Savannah Hersh on Black Excellence and her team:

“This season’s championship meant everything. To be a senior and see how much development there has been in this program from when I was a freshman, makes it feel like all the pieces fell into place. Through all the hardships and disappointments, the entire program has endured, it was such a surreal feeling to see it just all come together and really be worth it. When it comes to Black Excellence and this team, I think it is history being made. It is almost unheard of an HBCU to be considered ‘good’ to begin with, let alone go and win the whole thing. I am extremely proud of all the girls working so hard to reach our common goal and can only hope this program keeps the momentum going.”

Stay tuned throughout the month as the Spirit continues to share more stories of Black Excellence in celebration of Black History Month.
