An NWSL veteran, defender Casey Krueger has impressed in her first season with the Washington Spirit. Krueger signed with the Spirit in January after playing in Chicago since 2016. Earlier this season, Krueger earned NWSL Best XI honors for the month of June, her 14th such recognition. Since the monthly award began in 2017, no player has made more appearances in the NWSL’s Best XI of the Month than Krueger. She has also been named to year-end Best XI teams three times: Second Team in 2016, First Team in 2017 and 2019. Additionally, this summer Krueger earned a call-up to the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) for the 2024 Olympic Games, winning gold. It was Krueger’s second career Olympic call up.
You’re going home for a home-cooked meal – what’s on the menu?
Is it my cheat meal? In that case, I would probably say a Cajun pasta with a nice spicy sausage to go with that. I’d be basic and just have water. And same with dessert – keep it simple, so probably ice cream. I’ve got to say I am a big fan of Gruto’s (ice cream shop in Leesburg) now.
Describe this team in one word.
Gosh, that’s so tough to choose one word. There are so many words I feel that could describe this team, but “special,” I think is the number one that encompasses everything. Just because, honestly, it’s the best team that I’ve been a part of. Just so together both on and off the field, with so many special qualities, can attack teams in so many different ways. I think the most important thing is how together and cohesive we are.
Did you ever have a non-soccer job?
I was a leasing agent when I was injured for two years starting my professional soccer career. Not being able to play, I needed to support myself while I was still trying to train. So, I was down at Florida State University training, just kind of waiting on getting a call, and I decided to be a leasing agent. I loved it. I was so competitive. I’d try to hit all the company goals, and I was like, ‘I’m going to get the bonus this month,’ and I would go all out.
What is the coolest location you’ve ever played soccer?
This is tough. I have to acknowledge Norway because it was life-changing for me. At that point in my career, it made me fall in love with the game again. The people were so nice, the culture was incredible, and I really re-fell in love with the game, and it reignited that fire for me, and that was my first professional year, too. So that’s something that really stands in my memory.
Do you have any pets?
I have a Goldendoodle. His name is Frederick, a.k.a. Freddy Krueger. We thought we were so funny doing that, but he’s like the total opposite of what you think of with Freddy Krueger. He’s just like a big ball of love, the neediest dog in the world, but the best, and he will not leave our side for a second. He is also so patient with Caleb who will crawl all over him all the time and Fred just takes it. And he lets Caleb play horsey on him. I think we need to get a saddle for him.
What soccer player do you admire the most?
Marcelo. I mean because he’s a left back but not really a left back. He does it all. He was inspiring. I love watching him because he just has so much fun, so creative. But his left foot is so sick, too. And I feel like he thinks he’s a forward half the time. I aspire to play at a fraction of the level of what he showcased for so many years.
Who are your favorite bands?
The Lumineers is one of my top bands, and I finally got to go see them when I was pregnant. It was the best thing ever. I finally had time to go during the spring, and it was so much fun. It almost got rained out, but it only got a little bit delayed, and they still played, and it was the best show ever. I had the time of my life. I love their first album. That’s what really hooked me. Every single song is so good, but one of my favorites is Slow it Down (live version). As for others, I love The Weeknd. Spotify would probably have Elevation Worship as my top band, so worship music is up there for sure. I have a wide music range.
