Club welcomes Jill Aguilera, Maya Gordon for summer competition

Washington, D.C. (07/27/2024) – The Washington Spirit has agreed to terms with USL Super League clubs Carolina Ascent FC and Dallas Trinity FC on the short-term loans of two players, the clubs announced today. Carolina midfielder Jill Aguilera and Dallas defender Maya Gordon will join the Spirit for the remainder of the 2024 NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup while the club’s senior international players are away for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Both players will return to their original clubs upon the conclusion of this summer’s FIFA international window.

“Jill and Maya will help to fill out our roster through this summer’s tournament in the absence of our Olympic players,” said President of Soccer Operations/General Manager Mark Krikorian. “Their qualities on both the attacking and defending sides of the ball will help them integrate well into this team’s style of play.”

Aguilera arrives in DC on loan from Carolina Ascent FC. Prior to joining the USL Super League side, Aguilera played her first two professional seasons with the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars. In Chicago, the midfielder collected 1,000 minutes of playing time across 35 total appearances. Before turning pro, Aguilera attended the University of Arizona from 2016 to 2021. In five seasons with the Wildcats, Aguilera tallied 33 goals, a program record, and 15 assists across 92 appearances. She was a two-time All-Pac-12 Second Team honoree and three-time all-conference academic honoree.

Gordon joins the Spirit on loan from Dallas Trinity FC, where she prepares to begin her professional career after five seasons at LSU. Across 86 matches with the Tigers, the defender tallied three assists and over 6,300 minutes of playing time, even being named to the Southeastern Conference’s (SEC) all-conference Second Team following her sophomore campaign. Off the pitch, Gordon was a four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member.

The Spirit will continue group play of the 2024 NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup this weekend when it takes on East Coast rival NJ/NY Gotham FC at Chester, Pennsylvania’s Subaru Park on Sunday. Six Liga MX Femenil clubs and all 14 NWSL clubs will take part in this summer’s tournament with the top four group winners advancing to early August’s semifinals in Kansas City. Tickets to Sunday’s match are available here.
