The season started off strong for the Spirit on the field, and the momentum continued in the community. Here’s what happened in March:
March 5: LAYC Breakfast for Heroes
The Spirit’s Community Impact team attended the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC)’s breakfast to honor Patrica Chiancone, International Student Specialist at Prince George’s County Public Schools, and Kenneth E. Nance Jr., Principal of Buck Lodge Middle School, who have gone above and beyond for local youth and families.
March 7: International Women’s Day Event at the French Embassy
The French Embassy hosted a screening of LFG, the documentary following the USWNT’s fight for equal pay, and a panel on gender equity in sport which featured Spirit Owner, Michele Kang, Jen Gallagher of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and the Director of the Women’s Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor, Wendy Chun Hoon.
March 8: “Lift Women Now, Elevate the Future”
Hosted by Hotel Zena and the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Policy and Initiatives, this International Women’s Day celebration brought together women-led organizations from across the region. The Spirit’s Community Impact and Development teams spent the evening meeting new people in the community and interacting with our partners from the Mayor’s Office and DC SCORES.
March 13: District Sports’ Train Like A Pro with Ashley Hatch Adult Clinic
Ashley Hatch, along with seven other Spirit players serving as coaches, hosted a two-hour clinic for adults at Cardozo Education Campus. Spirit players ran through drills with participants to help them work on footwork and shooting. The night ended with a mini tournament, pictures, and a few autographs. All proceeds from the evening went to DC SCORES.
March 14: Read Across Maryland Event at Magnolia Elementary School
The Community Impact team attended a Read Across Maryland Event hosted by the Maryland State Education Association with a special appearance from the Spirit’s mascot, PK.
March 26: Excel Academy cleat donation with Leveling the Playing Field, DC SCORES, and CareFirst
As part of our partnership with CareFirst, we were able to work with Leveling the Playing Field to make sure all DC SCORES’ poet-athletes were ready and geared up for the spring season. You can learn more about our partnership with Excel Academy and CareFirst by watching our With Care series.
March 29: First Game Day for DC SCORES’ poet athletes at Johnson Middle School
This spring DC SCORES’ was able to add three new girls’ soccer teams at schools in Wards 7 and 8. These schools’ strategic placement helps to develop a pipeline for at least one high school east of the Anacostia River to have a girls’ soccer team. Our team was able to attend the very first game day for one of the schools, Johnson Middle School, where DC SCORES’s handed out donated Spirit gear to the team.
March 31: Women Executives in Sports Networking Panel
The Spirit’s Community Development team hosted a panel featuring executives at the forefront of Women’s Sports. The panel took place at Audi field shortly before the Women’s Empowerment match vs the Utah Royals. Members of the Spirit executive leadership team discussed how they entered the sport’s industry and provided insightful advice to professionals entering the field.
