March 8: “Lift Women Now, Elevate the Future”

Hosted by Hotel Zena and the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Policy and Initiatives, this International Women’s Day celebration brought together women-led organizations from across the region. The Spirit’s Community Impact and Development teams spent the evening meeting new people in the community and interacting with our partners from the Mayor’s Office and DC SCORES.

Ashley Hatch, along with seven other Spirit players serving as coaches, hosted a two-hour clinic for adults at Cardozo Education Campus. Spirit players ran through drills with participants to help them work on footwork and shooting. The night ended with a mini tournament, pictures, and a few autographs. All proceeds from the evening went to DC SCORES.

As part of our partnership with CareFirst, we were able to work with Leveling the Playing Field to make sure all DC SCORES’ poet-athletes were ready and geared up for the spring season. You can learn more about our partnership with Excel Academy and CareFirst by watching our With Care series.

March 29: First Game Day for DC SCORES’ poet athletes at Johnson Middle School

This spring DC SCORES’ was able to add three new girls’ soccer teams at schools in Wards 7 and 8. These schools’ strategic placement helps to develop a pipeline for at least one high school east of the Anacostia River to have a girls’ soccer team. Our team was able to attend the very first game day for one of the schools, Johnson Middle School, where DC SCORES’s handed out donated Spirit gear to the team.

March 31: Women Executives in Sports Networking Panel

The Spirit’s Community Development team hosted a panel featuring executives at the forefront of Women’s Sports. The panel took place at Audi field shortly before the Women’s Empowerment match vs the Utah Royals. Members of the Spirit executive leadership team discussed how they entered the sport’s industry and provided insightful advice to professionals entering the field.
