Boyds, Md. (7/16/20) – The Washington Spirit will face Sky Blue FC in the quarterfinals of the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup on Saturday, July 18.
We broke down some of the important stats you will want to know ahead of Saturday’s win or go home match.
With 80.3%, the Spirit are tied with the North Carolina Courage in the highest percentage of passes completed in the preliminary stage of the NWSL Challenge Cup. The Spirit and the Courage are also the only two teams in the Challenge Cup to complete at 80% of their passes.
The Spirit’s centerback duo, Paige Nielsen and Sam Staab, earned a combined pass completion rate 86.2% in the preliminary round. The defenders, who have played every minute of every game thus far in the tournament, were in the top 4 players of both passes attempted and completed passes. Nielsen leads the field, attempting 272 passes and successfully completing 236 of them, while Staab is fourth, attempting 241 passes and successfully completing 182 of them.
The Spirit are the highest-ranked team in the tournament when it comes to shots on target, with 60.6%. That is 13.2% higher than their opponent, Sky Blue, who are ranked third with 47.4%. The Spirit have taken twice as many shots on target (20) than Sky Blue, who has only managed to hit the target nine times.
The Washington Spirit have gone ten matches without losing to Sky Blue. This is the longest unbeaten streak the Spirit have against any NWSL team. The record from the last ten matches between the two has been two draws and eight wins in favor of the Spirit, including winning the teams’ three encounters last season.
