Boyds, Md., – Jill Ellis, the highly acclaimed and winningest coach in U.S. Soccer history, coached her last match for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Ellis led the USWNT to two straight World Cup Championships in 2015 and 2019, something no other coach has done. Ellis finished her USWNT tenure with a record of 106-7-19, making her the winningest coach in US Soccer history. Under her guidance, the USWNT averaged 3.1 goals per game, while only conceding 0.5 per game.
Washington Spirit and USWNT midfielder Rose Lavelle shared a heartfelt message for Ellis, where she thanked her for believing in her abilities and instilling confidence in her.
“I’ve been so grateful for how much she’s believed in me,” Lavelle said. “I feel like I’ve had so many ups and downs during my national team career. She stuck with me the whole time and had this belief in me, even when I didn’t have it in myself. I think when someone believes in you that much, you start believing in yourself.”
Lavelle also expressed her gratitude for Ellis’ contributions to the USWNT and the culture of women’s soccer.
“I’m grateful for how much she’s given to this program, this team, and soccer in general,” Lavelle said. “We’re definitely going to miss her, but I’m excited for whatever she has next too!
A few members of the USWNT, including Lavelle and Spirit forward Mallory Pugh, taped a thank you message to Ellis before sending her off.
