Boyds, MD., (7/31/2019)- The Spirit have had several players breakout during the 2019 season, but perhaps none more important to the team’s success than midfielder and team captain Andi Sullivan.
Being on a team that includes World Cup hero Rose Lavelle, the NWSL’s premier goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe, three Australian World Cup players and the best rookie class in club history, Sullivan’s impact can sometimes be overlooked, but cannot be overstated.
The Spirit captain has quietly been putting together a season to behold, proving that she has what it takes to lead an NWSL at just 23 years of age.
Sullivan leads all midfielders in shots, pass attempts, and duel percentage. She is also second in several statistical categories including touches and passing accuracy. Sullivan has also been remarkably consistent, she has played every minute of every game this season for the Spirit.
The Spirit captain tends to play deep in the defensive zone more often than not as heat map below shows.
Despite her defensive responsibilities, Sullivan has been able to contribute on the offensive end as well, as Sullivan notched her first goal this earlier this reason against Reign FC.

Sullivan has also been a tremendous asset to the Spirit off the pitch. The DMV native has been praised as leader by coach Richie Burke as “Our captain, our spokesperson, and our resident brilliant person.”
With the Spirit back in the top four, they will look to Andi Sullivan to continue to lead in the locker room and on the pitch as they enter the home stretch of the NWSL season.
