BOYDS, Md. (July 2, 2015) – The Washington Spirit (5-3-2, 17 points) travel to Kansas City to take on FC Kansas City (3-5-2, 11 points) for the second time this season. The Spirit will play on Friday, July 3rd at 8:00 p.m ET after having a physical and dominating game against the Houston Dash.
“I am extremely pleased with our defensive performance versus Houston and it is important to maintain that standard this Friday” said head coach Mark Parsons. “The team knows how important this game is and I believe our focus will lead us to a strong performance”.
The Washington Spirit played their second game of the 2015 NWSL season against FC Kansas City, with a convincing 3-1 win. FC Kansas City dominated the game with more shots on goal and attacking pressure. Goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris had to make nine saves on the night, to keep the Spirit tied going into the half 1-1. Midfielder Christine Nairn and forward Crystal Dunn provided the attacking pressure for the Spirit. Nairn braced two signature goals against FC Kansas City and Dunn gave the Spirit insurance going into the last twenty minutes of the game.
Midfielders Angela Salem and Joanna Lohman will look to push forward in the attacking third to help Dunn and the outside midfielder’s combine to get more opportunities on net. Dunn leads all players in the NWSL with seven goals in ten games. Her mindset and movement up top will be hard for FC Kansas City to contain throughout the game.
FC Kansas City, struggled in their two games playing difficult teams with Portland Thorns FC and Seattle Reign FC. Conceding late goals, led to FC Kansas City being unable to secure three points. They are led my their goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart, as she is second in most wins for a goalkeeper and saves. Barnhart has kept her team in close games throughout the season and FC Kansas City will look towards forwards Elizabeth Bogus and Shea Groom to give FC Kansas City the momentum to win against a very strong Spirit squad.
The Washington Spirit, rising in the standings, will look to secure three points this Fourth of July weekend before returning home for three consecutive home games.
