When the Washington Spirit met Portland Thorns FC for the first time this season on May 4 at the Maryland SoccerPlex, Spirit goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris was determined to give herself and her team the mental edge over their West Coast counterparts.
When Thorns FC were awarded a penalty kick in the 12 minute, Harris promptly left the goal to dispute the referee’s call, earning a yellow card before making her way to U.S. Women’s National Team teammate Alex Morgan, who was setting up to take the kick. Trying to get into Morgan’s head, Harris playfully yelled “Come on, come on!” at the superstar forward as she was lining up.
Unfortunately for Harris, Morgan tuned out the trash talk and made the PK to give Thorns FC an early lead.
The video below, provided by U.S. Soccer, shows Harris, Morgan, and USWNT/Thorns FC forward Sidney Leroux talking about the exchange, and other aspects of playing against National Team teammates in NWSL competition.
