Spirit advances after thrilling comeback victory over Bay FC in front of a sellout crowd at Audi Field
Washington, D.C. (11/10/2024) – Following Sunday’s thrilling comeback victory over Bay FC in front of a sellout crowd at Audi Field, the Washington Spirit will host rival NJ/NY Gotham FC on Saturday, November 16 at 12 p.m. EST in the club’s semifinal match, presented by Alarm.com. Gotham FC defeated Portland Thorns FC in the final match of the quarterfinal round and will travel to DC next weekend. Limited tickets are available here.
The Spirit will host a semifinal at Audi Field for the first time in club history. The club previously played in four NWSL semifinals in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2021 with only the 2016 contest being a home match at the team’s former home field in Maryland.
In Sunday’s quarterfinal match against expansion side Bay FC, the Spirit fell behind late in the second half before defender Tara McKeown found an equalizer just four minutes later in the 86th minute. After a flurry of Spirit chances to close out stoppage time, the match went to extra time where the home side emerged with the victory. A Bay FC own goal in the 96th minute gave the Spirit the 2-1 lead, a scoreline that would hold to the final whistle.
