The W-League announced its Team of the Week for Week 6 of the 2013 season today, honoring the top players in league matches over the previous weekend. Spirit Reserves midfielder Amber Stobbs snagged her second TOTW accolades while teammates Tiffany Brown, Meghan Cox, Morgan Reuther, and Kara Wilson garnered Honorable Mention honors.
Spirit Reserves midfielder Stobbs produced a strong performance against the New Jersey Wildcats last Saturday, tallying a goal and two assists as Washington improved to 4-1-0. Coming off a six point performance (four assists and a goal) in the previous game against the North Jersey Valkyries, the London native Stobbs has racked up an impressive eleven points in five games thus far this season.
In addition to earning two Team of the Week honors so far this season, Stobbs still leads the W-League in overall assists.
Forward Brown nabbed a goal and an assist against the Wildcats and defensive stalwart Cox anchored a back line that has only allowed a single goal in the last four games. Super-substitute Reuther earned mention on this week’s list by scoring two goals in the final five minutes of the New Jersey victory. Duke University product Wilson scored two goals in less than a minute to round out the Washington TOTW contingent.
Saturday’s victory puts the Spirit Reserves in a deadlock with Long Island Rough Riders for second place in Northeastern Conference standings, but each team has a game in-hand over the current frontrunner Virginia Beach Piranhas. Washington and Long Island meet this week for the first time this season to determine the early conference lead.
The Spirit Reserves showdown with the Long Island Rough Riders happens this Thursday June 20th at 7:00PM. That match will be held as a special event at Howison Homestead Complex in Woodbridge, Virginia.
