Harrison NJ., (3/8/20) – Washington Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle earned her second consecutive start in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup as the United States Women’s National Team defeated Spain 1-0 in the second match of the 2020 SheBelieves Cup. Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan was an option on the bench.

Lavelle played in her usual position, on the right side of a midfield three with Julie Ertz and Lindsay Horan. Lavelle played a full 90 minutes and in typical fashion made a number of crafty offensive plays and dribbles within the midfield and opposition’s third.

Spain challenged the US throughout the contest, denying the Americans from scoring until the 87th minute, when Ertz connected with a Christen Press free-kick. Ertz pumped a powerful header past Spanish keeper Sandra Paños, who had little time to react before the ball was in the net.

Despite the scoreline, Spain performed well, equaling the US’s shot total at nine and winning the possession battle 60 to 40, a rarity in matches featuring the usually ball-dominant US.

Next up for the USWNT will be Japan on Wednesday, March 11 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Japan currently sit at the bottom of the SheBelieves standings after defeats to Spain and England, while the US need only a draw to secure the title.
