Boyds, MD., (2/5/20) – The Washington Spirit have agreed to a corporate sponsorship with Women and Girls in Soccer (WAGS) for the 2020 NWSL Season.

WAGS’ mission provides opportunities to sponsor, develop, and provides educational and character-building programs for the benefit of women and girls through teaching and promoting an interest in the game of soccer. WAGS was a founding sponsor of the Washington Spirit in 2013 and they continue that support today with a renewed commitment to the players and Spirit organization.

WAGS has also committed that every dollar of the sponsorship will go directly towards impacting the lives of players at the Washington Spirit and the lives of the children they influence.

As part of the commitment, WAGS will underwrite Washington Spirit’s 2020 Preseason. The preseason, which was announced last week, includes a warm-weather training camp in Port St. Lucie, Florida as well as three fixtures at the Maryland SoccerPlex against the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina and Penn State.

WAGS will also become the presenting sponsor of the Washington Spirit’s new Alliance Development Program, a new platform to influence the future of the game at the youth level. The Partnership Program aims to generate more opportunities at the club and youth player level by connecting local youth programs with the professional coaches and players at the Washington Spirit.

Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke said this on the new partnership: “WAGS’ dedication to the players is displayed by their commitment to underwrite the Spirit’s 2020 preseason in Florida.”

Burke continued: ”By holding our first-ever warm-weather training camp, we are able to elevate our standards of excellence, allowing our players to perform at a higher level from the first kickoff of the preseason to the beginning 2020 season on April 18.”

Spirit Majority Owner Steve Baldwin had this to say on WAGS’ commitment to the Spirit: “I first met WAGS leadership early last year and they were the first partner to give me a chance. I shared with them our plans and the things we wanted to do for our players, and what stood out to me was the incredible commitment they have to players at all levels and their commitment to women and girls in all of their soccer pursuits – from, playing, to coaching, to refereeing.”

Baldwin continued: “WAGS was instrumental in supporting the launch of the Spirit in 2013 and they have an incredible history in the game. WAGS’ mission is to advance females and the game and I could not be more proud to have them as our partner and my friends.”

WAGS Chairwoman Lula Bauer said this on the new partnership: “WAGS is honored to be a partner and member of the Spirit Family. We are elated to be the Official Sponsor of the Washington Spirit’s 2020 preseason, including the March “warm-weather” camp in Florida. The concept of the “warm weather” preseason training aligns with the WAGS philosophy of promoting a sense of personal value and worth through our unique and noteworthy sponsorships.”

Bauer went on to say: “We are equally proud to be the newly named Presenting Sponsor of the Alliance Program, through our support of this Washington Spirit initiative we are able to support the future development of the game.“
