KINGSTON, JA., (10/9/19) – Washington Spirit and Jamaican National Team forward Cheyna Matthews shined in the Reggae Girlz first round of Olympic Qualifying matches against Cuba, Barbados, St. Lucia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Matthews and the Reggae Girls swept through Group B of the CONCACAF Caribbean Olympic Qualifying stage, as they won all four of their games by a margin of seven goals or more. The qualifiers took place over the past two weeks from September 30 to October 8.
Matthews’ most impressive outing came in the Reggae Girlz first match against Cuba where she recorded four goals in a 12-1 rout. The single goal allowed to Cuba was the only score Jamaica conceded in their set of games.
In the Reggae Girlz second game at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, Matthews found the back of the net again, recording a brace in a 7-0 blowout of visiting Barbados. The goals kept coming for Matthews in the Reggae Girlz’ next match against St. Lucia as she chipped in one goal in a 11-0 win.
Jamaica finished their perfect Olympic Qualifying run against the U.S. Virgin Islands with another 7-0 blowout win. Matthews contributed with one goal scored in the 8th minute of action.
Over the course of the qualifying run, Matthews appeared in all four games, scoring a total of eight goals. Matthews has made six appearances for the Reggae Girlz.
With four wins, Jamaica finished on top of their group with 12 points. Jamaica will move on to the next round of Olympic Qualifiers where they will take on the likes of the United States, Canada and Mexico to compete for a spot in the 2020 Olympic games.
