Boyds, Md., (7/11/19) – The Washington Spirit Reserves defeated SYC 2-0 on Sunday to complete a perfect 5-0-0 record in their inaugural CCL season.

With 15 points earned in five games, the Spirit Reserves finished the regular season in first place after Sunday’s victory. The top-of-the-table finish qualifies the team for the upcoming CCL Pro23 semifinals, which will occur this weekend.

The Spirit Reserves held the majority of possession throughout the match, but were unable to break through in the first half. Strong defending on both sides kept the score deadlocked at 0-0 until halftime.

It only took two minutes in the second half for Spirit defender Meaghan Nally to find the back of the net. With the lead, the reserves team was able to take control of the match.

About thirty minutes later, forward Taylor Carter doubled the Spirit’s lead off a pass from Jasmine Hamid. The team then closed out the remainder of the game to secure its spot at the top of the CCL table.

While the reserves squad recorded 15 shots throughout the match, they were able to hold SYC to only one shot on goal. The solid defensive performance allowed the team to earn its fifth straight shutout, meaning no opponent was able to score on the Spirit Reserves this season.

Reflecting on the team’s 2-0 victory, Carter says, “As a whole, I think we did well today. We did well switching the point of attack and finding the high diagonal balls to break the lines, and when we did break the lines we did well getting in and finishing our chances.”

Coming off a successful regular season, the Spirit Reserves will begin their fight for the CCL Championship in the semifinals this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Woodson HS vs. Spirit U23’s.
