Boyds, Md., (7/8/19) – Washington Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle and forward Mallory Pugh earned a place in U.S. soccer history on Sunday as the USWNT lifted the Women’s World Cup trophy for a record fourth time.

Lavelle’s 69th-minute goal was one of the defining highlights of the 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Lyon, France. Her terrific solo effort doubled the Americans’ lead and put the game out of reach for the Dutch, who fell short in their first World Cup final appearance.
After receiving a pass from Sam Mewis, Lavelle dribbled from near the center circle into the penalty area before unleashing a shot that screamed into the bottom right corner of the net. It was Lavelle’s third goal of the tournament, and one the country won’t be forgetting for a long time.

Lavelle was one of the breakout players on the world’s biggest stage this summer. She started in six of the seven U.S. games and earned the Bronze Ball award as the third-best player of the tournament. She is in her second season with the Spirit after joining the club in 2018.
At just 21, Pugh is one of the brightest young stars in the NWSL. She joined the Spirit in 2017 and has scored eight goals in 33 appearances for Washington. She played in each of the three World Cup group stage matches and scored in the opening victory against Thailand.

The U.S. attack controlled play for much of the first half in Sunday’s game, creating a majority of the chances early on. The breakthrough came in the 61st minute, when Megan Rapinoe converted a penalty kick to open the scoring.
The USWNT completed a perfect 7-0 run through the World Cup with a record 26 goals scored and became just the second nation to win back-to-back Women’s World Cups.
Lavelle and Pugh will return to the DMV soon as the Spirit’s 2019 NWSL campaign continues. The team will next be in action at the Maryland SoccerPlex on July 20 against the Houston Dash. [TICKETS]
