Boyds, Md., (6/13/19) – Spirit midfielder Chloe Logarzo earned her second start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday, playing all 90 minutes as her home country of Australia beat Brazil in comeback fashion, 3-2. The win lifted the Australians into a tie for first place in Group C with one match remaining.

On a sunny evening at Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier, France, the Matildas fell behind 2-0 in the first half, but Logarzo spearheaded the Australian resurgence with a goal and an assist. She capped the performance by being voted Player of the Match by fans across the globe on the FIFA website.

With the Matildas trailing 2-0 in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, Logarzo received a cross in the penalty box. Despite being tightly marked, she managed to outjump her defender and direct the ball toward teammate Caitlin Foord, who knocked the ball into the net after a well-timed run. The crucial goal cut Australia’s deficit in half as the first 45 came to an end.

In the 58th minute, Logarzo brought the Matildas level with her seventh career international goal. She sent a bouncing ball from well outside the box toward teammate Sam Kerr, who used her presence to pull Brazil’s defenders and goalkeeper out of position to block the shot as it found a home at the far post.

The goal was the fourth of the tournament so far by a Spirit player after midfielder Rose Lavelle scored twice and forward Mallory Pugh tallied once in the United States’ 13-0 win over Thailand on Tuesday.

A Brazil own goal in the 66th minute completed Australia’s comeback victory and handed the Matildas their first win of the tournament. The team will be back in action on June 18 as it completes its Group C schedule against Jamaica. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised on Fox Sports 2.
