BOYDS, MD (Nov. 22, 2016) – The Washington Spirit has signed forward Francisca Ordega to a new contract for the 2017 NWSL season. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Franny had a significant impact this past season and really became accustomed to the league,” said Spirit general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra. “We are excited that she has re-signed with the Spirit and look forward to her continued development in the NWSL.”

The Spirit signed Francisca “Franny” Ordega prior to the 2015 season. She scored three goals and notched two assists for the Spirit in 2015 and two goals and one assist in 2016. The Gboko, Nigeria native scored the game winning goal in extra time in the NWSL semifinal to send the Spirit to its first ever NWSL Championship.

As a member of the Nigerian Women’s National Team, Ordega participated in the 2011 and 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cups. During the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, she scored the game-tying goal in Nigeria’s group stage match against Sweden. The Nigerian star also scored four goals in the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and three goals in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Ordega is currently participating in the Africa Cup of Nations. She scored the opening goal in Nigeria’s first group stage match win against Mali.
