The Washington Spirit broke a three game losing streak last night with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dash. Jodie Taylor’s goal mid way through the second half was all the Spirit needed to snap a three game losing streak Saturday night. The victory brings Washington back to .500 with a record of 7-7-1. Houston drops to 4-9-1.

The Spirit have struggled over the past few weeks, dropping their last three matches, while tallying only 2 goals in their last four. With an opportunity to take advantage of a struggling Dash side, the Spirit capitalized on their few chances and while managing to hold off a quick Dash offense at the other end.

It was Jodie Taylor who provided the Spirit offense. In the second half, after a long stretch of 0-0 play, the Spirit broke through on a counterattack. Following a clear, Lisa DeVanna found Taylor at the top of the box with a beautiful ball. Taylor calmly chipped the ball over and past goalkeeper Erin McLeod to give the Spirit a 1-0 advantage. Taylor’s 7 goals this season for the Spirit put her at 4th in the league.

The single goal was enough. Led by a strong performance by Ashlyn Harris, the Spirit were able to get their third shutout of the season. Harris, who had been away from the club due to her national team commitments, made two saves to preserve the shutout.

This was a much-needed win for the Spirit. By moving back up to .500, they find themselves back in 3rd place, right in the thick of the playoff race. With Kansas City and Seattle appearing to run away with the top two spots, five teams currently find themselves in a tight race for the other two coveted playoff spots.

That’s it for the Spirit in the month of June. They conclude the opening month of summer with a 3-3 record. They are back in action at home against the Boston Breakers on Wednesday June 2nd.
