The Washington Spirit Reserves officially began to shape their 2014 season roster today by announcing the signing of University of North Carolina defender Satara Murray to the W-League squad. A stalwart force on the Tar Heel backline, Murray is expected to immediately bolster the Spirit Reserves defense for the upcoming season.

A native of Austin, Texas, Murray started every game and led the UNC roster in minutes played over the previous college season. The tall and powerful Murray had a breakthrough campaign for the Tar Heels in 2012, helping Carolina claim a national championship. In addition to notching a goal and an assist in the final match against Penn State, her efforts were rewarded when she was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the 2012 NCAA College Cup.

As a youth player, Murray led her Lonestar ‘93 club team to two consecutive state championships in 2010 and 2011 as well as running track and playing basketball for McNeil High School. Murray also earned a spot on the 2010 NSCAA Youth All-Region Soccer Team during her young soccer career.

No stranger to the USL, Murray contributed to the 2013 W-League Championship title as a member of the Pali Blues.

“Satara is a tremendous athlete,” commented Spirit Reserves General Manager Tim Schweitzer. “The combination of her physical presence, intelligence, and speed make her a domineering authority on the back line.”

“Satara commands the defensive third and stands as a force to be reckoned with,” concluded Schweitzer.

The Washington Spirit Reserves face a challenging schedule of opponents in the Northeast Conference for the season, which include historic playoff contenders Long Island Rough Riders and W-League veterans New York Magic.

The Spirit Reserves kick off their season Saturday, May 17th against the Braddock Road Stars Elite at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Match time is currently slated for 3:00PM and is the first match of a special doubleheader with the Washington Spirit professional side. The Spirit take on Abby Wambach and the Western New York Flash at 6:30PM.
