Mexican international midfielder Teresa Guadalupe “Lupita” Worbis arrived in Washington Tuesday and took part in her first training session with the Washington Spirit on Wednesday.
Worbis, 29, has a decade of experience with the Mexican women’s national team and was one of two players from the Federation of Mexican Football who were allocated to the Spirit prior to the start of the inaugural season of the National Women’s Soccer League.
“It’s the first time I have this experience, and I’m so happy it’s here in Washington with this team,” Worbis said. “I like that it’s a very competitive league – I’ve seen some games on the Internet – and I want to play now and do the best I can for the team.”
Before she could join her new club, Worbis finished a degree in architecture at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Puebla, Mexico, graduating on May 25. With her undergraduate education complete, Worbis is anxious to jump from an academic environment to raising both her playing and training level in the NWSL.
Worbis’ Mexican teammate, Alicia Garciamendez, who was also allocated to the Spirit, is no longer expected to join the team once she finishes her senior year at Stanford, where commencement takes place next month.
A veteran member of the Mexican national team, Worbis last played against the U.S. in June 2011, when the teams met just prior to the 2011 Women’s World Cup, a match the U.S. won, 1-0.
Worbis will have more than two weeks to train with her new teammates before the Spirit (1-4-3) return to action Saturday, June 15, at 7 p.m. ET against Western New York Flash at Maryland SoccerPlex.
“It’s a good time to be training with the team,” Worbis said, “so I can get to know them, and they can get to know me.”
Ticket sales for the June 15 game against Western New York Flash are nearing the 3,000 mark. The popular “Home Side General Admission” section sold out late Thursday, leaving only VIP Reserved seating and General Admission options on the grass of “Spirit Hill”, in the far-side stands, or standing around the stadium’s wide concourses.
