Bethune earns her fourth Rookie of the Month honor of 2024

Washington, D.C. (09/05/2024) – Washington Spirit midfielder Croix Bethune has been named the NWSL Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, for her performance during August competition, the league announced today. Bethune, who became the first player in NWSL history to win the award in back-to-back months and in three consecutive months earlier this year, wins the honor for the fourth time in five months.

The third overall pick in this year’s NWSL Draft, Bethune picked up in August right where she left off in early July. In August 25’s high-stakes regular season match against the Kansas City Current, she assisted on forward Ouleye Sarr’s game-winning goal. The assist was Bethune’s tenth of the season, tying the NWSL single season assist record set by Tobin Heath in 2016. Bethune played in all 17 of the Spirit’s regular season matches this season through August, playing 1,389 out of a possible 1,530 minutes and tallying five goals and ten assists.

Earlier this summer, Bethune was selected as an alternate to travel with the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. She made her senior international debut in July’s pre-Olympic friendly against Mexico. Bethune was also selected for the USWNT’s matchday rosters for all three group stage matches in France, appearing in the side’s match against Australia and bringing home a gold medal after the U.S.’s tournament victory.

The NWSL Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally award is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.
