The Washington Spirit and The Gathering Spot invite you to Celebrating Our Roots: A Conversation on Juneteenth and Black Culture in DC on Tuesday, June 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We aim to celebrate Juneteenth, foster meaningful dialogue and community connections, and pay homage to the vibrant tapestry of Black culture in our city.

Lafayette Barnes IV
Lafayette Barnes IV is a third-generation publisher and multidisciplinary creative entrepreneur. Born and raised in S.E., DC, he attended Wilson SHS before attending Howard University & The Wharton School. His platform, The Washington Informer Bridge, exemplifies his passion for community, creative expression, and entrepreneurship.
Angela Tate
Angela Tate is the Curator of Women’s History for the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She is a doctoral candidate at Northwestern University as well as a writer, and artist. Her dissertation follows the history of Black women in radio and their involvement in global civil rights movements, with an emphasis on the intersections between celebrity, activism, and feminism.
Mary Elliott
Mary Elliott is the Curator of American Slavery at the National Museum of African American History and Culture and currently chairs the Smithsonian’s Congress of Scholars. She’s a graduate of Howard University and the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law. Mary has over twenty years of experience in research and has helped produce local history exhibits in the DC area.

RSVPs are required to attend. Guests must be 21 years or older.
Dress Code: Smart casual
Transportation: Parking is limited. Guests should utilize public transit or ride share services when possible. The closest Metro stop is Farragut West on the Blue Line.
