Getting to Know Forward Brittany Ratcliffe

Washington Spirit  |   March 27, 2024

You’ve seen her orange bow on the pitch, now get to know forward Brittany Ratcliffe a bit more:

What is your first soccer memory?
Playing township soccer for my local town – Franklin Township Youth Soccer. I think my first team was the Wolverines. Did you play other sports? I played softball, basketball, gymnastics. I did karate for a day, but hid under the table because I didn’t like it. I did dance but can’t keep a beat, so that was short-lived.

What athletes did you look up to as a kid?
When I was younger, I used to go to all the WUSA (Women’s United Soccer Association) games. I was a Philadelphia Charge fan. (Mark) Krikorian was the coach – what a full circle moment. I used to go to all of their games, and I was a part of their fan club. Is there a story behind your jersey number? It was the first number I ever had. No one wanted 13. I thought it was different, and I liked that no one else wanted it, or thought it was an unlucky number. So, I was like, ‘I want it!’ I grew up my whole career, always 13, and then I had to switch when I got to college (University of Virginia) because it was taken. So, I had to be 11. Now that I’m 13 again, I am very happy with it.

What career highlight are you most proud of?
Probably getting drafted. I did not think I was going to get drafted. I was literally speaking (in class), giving a presentation and my phone started to ring. I saw it was a Boston number. I picked up my phone and walked out of the room mid-presentation. It was a final! When I came back in, my professor asked, ‘Did you seriously take a phone call in the middle of a presentation?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m so sorry, I got drafted (by the Boston Breakers).’ And everyone went crazy and was super excited.

What is your favorite sport to watch?
I’d probably say soccer. I feel like when you’re young, you don’t appreciate soccer. If I was younger, I probably would say a different sport, but now that I’m older, I do enjoy watching the game. Do you collect anything? Graphic tees – I love t-shirts. I have so many car t-shirts. I just bought four for no reason other than I just liked them. I wouldn’t say I’m a collector, I just love t-shirts that have stuff on them.

What’s your dream car?
It’s tough because we’re a big car family, so I could give a couple different answers. I could say a 72′ Chevy Blazer, which we have. Or, if I was getting exotic, I would probably say a Ford GT40.

What was your first concert?
Cole Swindell when I was a senior in college. I had never been to a concert before. It was such a good concert, standing room only, and I was front row.

What is your go-to coffee or tea order?
I don’t drink caffeine.

What’s always in your fridge?
Milk.
