DMV area organization Food & Friends (F&F) invited the Washington Spirit to attend its “Slice of Life” pie-tasting event at Dacha Beer Garden in Washington, D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood on Tuesday, November 8. Among the notable attendees were Spirit midfielders Anna Heilferty and Marissa Sheva.
F&F is a community-based organization in the Washington, D.C. region that provides nutritional home-delivered meals medically tailored to those living with cancer, HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses. Through its annual “Slice of Life” fundraising event, F&F raised enough money to provide over 350,000 meals to DMVers in need.
The event kicked off with a period of greetings and introductions amongst the official tasters from Spirit players to food bloggers to F&F community members. Before the tasting began, all attendees were treated to a live demonstration of how F&F’s apple crumble pie is made, along with more information on the F&F mission. In addition to home-delivered meals, F&F also provides grocery delivery services and nutrition counseling to help those it serves to feel their best.
Featuring pies for all palettes, the tasting included sweet potato, apple crumble, pecan, pumpkin and sea salt chocolate chess pie. The room voted the sea salt chocolate chess pie the favorite in a near-consensus.
Marissa Sheva’s official comments on the chocolate chess pie: “I don’t want to taste another pie for the rest of my life, I just want to eat this one.”
Not to be outdone, Anna Heilferty dissented and voted for the apple crumble pie: “It’s got a good sourness to it too, with a little bit of the apple coming through… Wow.”
F&F was able to showcase the work the organization does in the community while raising awareness around who they are, what their mission is and how you can support them.
