Boyds, Md., (11/7/19) – Washington Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle earned a spot in the starting XI for the United States Women’s National Team’s friendly match against Sweden. The match was new manager Vlatko Andonovski’s first game in charge after being appointed last October.

Lavelle put in a strong shift within the US midfield, playing as an advanced midfielder in the US midfield three. Despite multiple creative runs with the ball into the Sweden box, Lavelle was kept off the scoresheet before being subbed off in the 62nd minute for Sam Mewis. In 2019, Lavelle has played now played in 17 games for the USWNT in 2019, including six in the World Cup.

Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan entered play directly after halftime, coming on for Julie Ertz. Sullivan made her 14th career appearance for the USWNT on Thursday night.

Additionally, forward Mallory Pugh entered the game in the 61st minute for Tobin Heath, taking up a spot in the US attack. Pugh has now appeared in 18 games for the USWNT in 2019.

Despite the fixture being classified as a friendly, the chilly Thursday night match in Columbus, Ohio at MAPFRE Stadium was a heavyweight matchup between fifth-ranked Sweden and the top-ranked USWNT.

The US jumped to a quick lead after forward Carli Lloyd scored in the sixth minute of play to make it 1-0. Forward Christen Press found the back of the net in the 28th minute of play to make it 2-0, quickly followed by another Lloyd goal in the 31st minute to bring the score to 3-0 at half.

Despite a late comeback attempt, the US secured a 3-2 victory in Andonovski’s first match at the helm. The US are back in action this Sunday, November 10 as they take on Costa Rica.
