Kingston, Jamaica, (10/1/19) – Jamaica kicked off their CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Caribbean Qualifying campaign last night, beating Cuba in convincing fashion 12-1 at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.
Despite arriving just one day prior to the match, Spirit forward Cheyna Matthews led an unforgiving Reggae Girlz attack with four goals on the night.
Matthews was relentless in her attack, finding the back in the 20th and 31st minutes to make it 4-0 to the Reggae Girlz. At the half, Jamaica was leading Cuba 5-0. The scoring continued into the second half as Matthews scored two more in the 62nd minute to make it 7-1 and shortly after in the 69th minute to push the score to 8-1.
Matthews’ strike in the 20th minute was her first-ever goal with the Jamaican Women’s National Team.
The big win put the Girlz on top of Group B with three points and a healthy goal difference ahead of the field. Also in group B are the US Virgin Islands, St. Lucia and Barbados.
Only the three group winners will advance to the final round, where they will meet the United States, Mexico, Canada and others to qualify for the 2020 Olympic games.
