Ngock and Indomitable Lionesses win first continental championship in team history
Washington, D.C. (08/16/2026) – Incoming Washington Spirit midfielder Monique Ngock led her native Cameroon to its first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) championship with a 3-0 win over Malawi in Sunday’s final. Ngock is now just the fifth player in NWSL history to win WAFCON and second in Spirit history after Nigeria’s Francisca Ordega did so in 2016. Current midfielder Deborah Abiodun also won last summer’s WAFCON with Nigeria while she was still away from the Spirit on loan.
Ngock started five of Cameroon’s six matches during its tournament run this summer, totaling 480 minutes of action in the midfield. She also provided the assist on the Indomitable Lionesses’ first goal of the tournament. Ngock and Cameroon went undefeated through the group stage before taking down defending champion Nigeria in the quarterfinals, Morocco in the semifinals and Malawi in the title match.
Also making a podium finish at the 2026 WAFCON this weekend was fellow incoming Spirit player Mélissa Bethi and Algeria. With a penalty shootout victory over host nation Morocco on Saturday, Algeria secured the bronze medal at this summer’s tournament. Bethi started the third place match and played all 120 minutes of action to help her side to the win.
The Spirit will take the pitch at Audi Field next on Sunday, August 23 when it takes on the Orlando Pride. Kicking off at 4 p.m. EDT, the match’s theme will be Love is Loud: Pride. Tickets are available at WashingtonSpirit.com/tickets.
