Boyds, Md., (9/30/19) – Spirit forward Rose Lavelle has been nominated for the NWSL Goal of the Week award for her game-winning strike in the 84th minute that clinched the Spirit’s 2-1 victory over North Carolina.
Washington was tied with the Courage with less than 10 minutes left in the match. Spirit forward Arielle Ship laid the ball off to Lavelle in front of the box. Lavelle was being guarded by Courage defender Abby Dahlkemper and two more North Carolina defenders closed in on her as she received the pass.
Lavelle took a small initial touch and then sharply dribbled to her left to beat Dahlkemper and create enough space for an open look. With the crowd cheering her on, Lavelle took a shot with her left foot that beat Stephanie Labbe and zipped into the bottom right corner of the goal.

The go-ahead strike was Lavelle’s first-ever goal for the Spirit. Lavelle credited Ship’s pass for putting her in a position to score.
“It took me long enough,” Lavelle said as she laughed. “Ari did a great job, she came on and had such an impact. She drew some defenders in and then played me the ball. Thankfully I had a bit of space and they didn’t close down on me too hard so I was able to get a shot off. I think Ari did all the work there.
Lavelle, who was recently named to the FIFPRO Best 11, finished the game with 2 shots on target, 73 touches, 50 passes, 2 chances created and 1 goal.
Spirit fans can vote for Lavelle’s goal via the NWSL’s Twitter. Voting closes 3:30 p.m. ET Tuesday.
Washington will travel to Orlando to take on the Pride on Saturday, Oct. 5. The match will be streaming online on Monumental Sports and will be televised on NBC Sports Washington.
