Boyds, Md. (6/21/19) – The Washington Spirit will host the Houston Dash this weekend at the Maryland SoccerPlex for their first home game in three weeks. [TICKETS]
Last Saturday the Spirit earned a 1-1 draw during a tough road test against Reign FC. The Spirit have not lost a game in 62 days and are currently in the midst of a franchise-record six-game unbeaten streak.
Houston is one of the three teams remaining in the NWSL that the Spirit have yet to take the pitch against. So far this season the Dash have been one of the most consistently inconsistent teams in the NWSL. Houston’s form reflects this as the Dash have gone 2-2-1 in their last three games, including a draw against bottom of the league Orlando and a win over second-place Utah.
One of the things that stands out about Houston is the abundance of Canadians on the club. The Dash has a league-high five Canucks on the squad, the following four of which are not playing due to World Cup duty: defenders Allysha Chapman, and Lindsay Agnew, midfielder Sophie Schmidt, and forward Nichelle Prince. The Dash are also missing Australian defender Clare Polkinghorne and English forward Rachel Daly. Houston is the only team in the league without a United States call-up.
The Spirit continue to defend first place on the table this week. One of the biggest reasons the Spirit have been able to gain and hold the top of the table is home field advantage. The Spirit hold a plus-six home goal differential, the best in the NWSL.
Spirit forward Crystal Thomas was quick to praise the SoccerPlex crowd in an interview earlier this week, saying, “Playing at home is fantastic, we love our fans, we love the squadron. They do a great job of just bringing a fantastic atmosphere, a fantastic environment, we always feel supported and we want to put on a good show for them.”
The Spirit will be hosting their first-ever Pride Night. The Spirit will be having several special events and features exclusive to Pride Night, from guest vendors to exclusive merchandise and more.
The first 500 fans through the gates will be receiving Spirit-themed rainbow wristbands. The Spirit and Rockville Soccer will also be selling exclusive “Spirit Pride” merchandise.
Finally, Spirit legend Johanna Lohman will be honored for her contributions to the team and the community at halftime. Lohman is the first player to ever have her jersey number retired for the Spirit. Lohman will also be signing autographs from the 15th to the 30th minute. For a full list of vendors, event, and features see this press release.
Kickoff at the Maryland SoccerPlex is set for 7:00 p.m. ET, with Gate D and the Fan Zone opening at 5:30 p.m. ET for all ticket-holding fans. [TICKETS]
