Boyds, MD (6/14/19) – The Washington Spirit U23 squad opened up their Club Champions League (CCL) Pro23 season on Saturday with a dominant 5-0 victory over Potomac.
This was a historic win for the squad in their inaugural match. The Spirit U23s connected well and ultimately find the back of the net five times throughout the 90 minutes. The young team led by coaches Mark Dolansky and Raphiou Laleye now has three points to its name in the CCL standings.
The Spirit U23s brought the tempo early as they scored four of their five goals within the first twenty minutes of the match. They continued to find success throughout the remainder of the game, recording 26 shots while holding Potomac to just one shot on target. The Spirit U23s were able to control the majority of possession with their high-tempo attack and limit the Potomac side to very few opportunities offensively.
Spirit forward Amy Thompson had one goal and two assists while forward Ginny Delacruz scored two goals. When asked about the team’s performance, Thompson says, “everyone played really well, and we just connected well, and that’s what led us to be able to get in and score some goals.”
The Spirit U23 squad will look to continue its success in its next match on Sunday, June 16 at 4:00 p.m. against Loudoun at WT Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia.
