Reims, France, (6/11/19) – Washington Spirit players Rose Lavelle and Mallory Pugh combined for three goals as the United States drubbed Thailand 13-0 in their first 2019 World Cup match.
Lavelle had a strong showing in her first ever World Cup match, scoring two of the US’s thirteen goals. The midfielder’s first goal was a low drive from the top of the penalty box that was tailing to the left. While Thailand keeper Sukanya Chor Charoenying was able to get a hand on the ball, Lavelle’s shot was too powerful, pushing past the keeper and into the net.
Lavelle’s second goal was a tap-in from the center of the box following a quick pass from fellow US midfielder Sam Mewis. Lavelle was subbed out shortly after her second goal for forward Carli Lloyd.
Pugh also scored one goal in her first-ever World Cup appearance. After subbing in for Julie Ertz in the 68 minute, Pugh quickly notched an assist on a Megan Rapinoe strike. Pugh would later score in the 84th minute after the US countered a Thailand attack in the midfield. Pugh connected on a square ball in from the right flank, out-running the Thai backline and finishing a chance in front of goal.
The Stars and Stripes scored the most goals of any team in World Cup history in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,029. The US dominated the possession, retaining 72 percent possession. In addition, the US took 20 shots on target opposed to Thailand’s two.
The first half was lopsided with the Stars and Stripes scoring three goals with the second half managing to be even more dominant with 10 goals scored. A total of six goals were scored in the last 20 minutes of the match.
Lavelle, Pugh and the U.S. Women’s National Team will next play in Paris on Sunday, June 16 at 9 a.m. ET against Chile.
