Boyds, MD (June 2, 2018) – The Washington Spirit fell to the visiting Chicago Red Stars 2-0 Saturday night in a game delayed over five hours due to numerous lightning delays.
Chicago improved to 3-3-6 (15 points) as Washington fell to 2-7-2 (8 points) on the season.
Moments before kickoff was set to go at 3:50 p.m. ET, the players and fans were forced to clear the Maryland SoccerPlex due to weather conditions. Kickoff would not begin until 9 p.m. ET in a game that was mostly played in heavy rain.
Chicago struck first with a goal from Australian standout Sam Kerr in the 25th minute. The Red Stars earned a free kick outside the box taken by Yuki Nagasato which skipped right in front of Spirit goalie Kelsey Wys. Kerr finished the deflected ball to give the Red Stars a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Nagasato doubled the lead for the Red Stars. Her left-footed strike that she snuck in-between two Spirit defenders was assisted by Chicago captain Alyssa Mautz.
The best chance for Washington came in first half stoppage time when Havana Solaun took a direct kick just outside the penalty area that sailed just high of the net.
Washington recorded five shots on goal and a total of 12 shots. Ashley Hatch led the Spirit in both categories with five total shots, three of which were on goal.
Wys started in goal for the first time this season and recorded two saves. Her counterpart Emily Boyd recorded five saves on all five Spirit shots on target for the Red Stars.
In the losing effort, Washington out-possessed Chicago 56.4 percent to 43.6 percent. The Spirit recorded more shots than the Red Stars did (12 to 11).
The Washington Spirit returns to the field Friday, June 8 in Piscataway, New Jersey to take on Sky Blue FC at 7 p.m. The team returns home in two weeks on Saturday, June 16 at 7 p.m. to face off with Seattle Reign FC. [TICKETS]
