Boyds, MD (May 29, 2018) – Washington Spirit forward Francisca Ordega has been called into national team duties for the Nigerian Women’s National Team ahead of two matches against Gambia on June 6 and June 11.
The home and away matches are one of seven fixtures to serve as qualifiers to the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations beginning in November in Ghana. The Africa Women’s Cup of Nations serves as the confederation’s championship and also as qualifiers to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, where the top three of eight teams competing qualify.
Ordega was on the squad for Nigeria at the 2010 and 2014 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, both of which were won by the Super Falcons. Nigeria has won 11 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations and is the top ranked African team in the FIFA Women’s Rankings at 38th in the world.
Ordega, a 24-year old from Gboko, Nigeria, is tied with Ashley Hatch for team lead in 2018 with three goals. She scored goals in three consecutive games this season against the North Carolina Courage, Portland Thorns, and Chicago Red Stars.
The Washington Spirit returns home Saturday, June 2 when the team takes on the Chicago Red Stars on the Lifetime NWSL Game of the Week at 3:30 p.m. ET. [TICKETS]
