Boyds, MD (April 16, 2018) – Washington Spirit midfielders Estefanía Banini (ARG) and Yanara Aedo (CHI) each played major roles for their respective national teams as they advanced through the first round of the 2018 Copa América Femenina.
Banini and Argentina earned the second and final spot in the next round from Group B, posting a 3-1-0 record in the opening round. Banini finished tied for fifth among all players across the 10 competing teams during the first stage with three goals scored, as Argentina outscored its opponents by a margin of 12-6.
Aedo also found the net three times during the group stage, tied with Banini and three other players for the fifth-most among all goal scorers, and helped Chile advance through Group A with an unbeaten 2-0-2 record. Chile placed second in the group, scoring eight times and conceding only two goals in four games.
Four nations – Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia – have reached final stage of the Copa América Femenina, which kicks off Monday, April 16. Each team will play each other once from April 16-22, and the side that finishes at the top of the table earns qualification for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Second place secures a spot in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and a chance in the Olympic CAF–CONMEBOL play-off.
Third place earns a berth in the World Cup CONCACAF–CONMEBOL play-off and the 2019 Pan American Games, while fourth place qualifies only for the Pan American Games.
