Boyds, MD (July 31, 2017) – Washington Spirit forward Mallory Pugh entered as a substitute in the 53rd minute and played the remainder of the match as the U.S. Women’s National Team staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Brazil 4-3 on Sunday night at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
After going down 3-1 to Brazil in the 78th minute, the Americans netted three goals in a nine-minute span between the 80′-89′ mark on strikes from Christen Press, Megan Rapinoe and Julie Ertz.
Pugh played an active role on the attacking side for the USA, making several dangerous runs and recording one shot on goal on a breakaway up the right side. She has recorded 94 minutes of playing time through her first two Tournament of Nations games, including 57 minutes in a starting role to open the event against Australia on Jul 27.
With the win, the USA remains in contention to win the Tournament of Nations, trailing only Australia in the standings heading into the final match day. The USA will close out the event on Thursday, August 3 against Japan. The game will be shown live on ESPN2 and UDN starting at 10 p.m. ET.
