BOYDS, Md (Feb 22, 2017) – The Canada Soccer Association announced Washington Spirit players Shelina Zadorsky, Stephanie Labbé, and 2017 draftee Lindsay Agnew as part of the 22 player roster for the Algarve Cup which will take place in Portugal from March 1-8.
Canada, the defending Algarve Cup Champions, will play Denmark (featuring Spirit midfielder Line Sigvardsen Jensen) on March 1, Russia on March 3, and Portugal on March 6. The Final is scheduled for March 8.
Labbé was the starting goalkeeper for all but one match of the Canadian 2016 Olympic bronze medal winning effort. For the Spirit, the Edmonton native started eight games in 2016 and recorded five clean sheets, a club record for a single season.
Zadorsky, also a member of the 2016 Olympic bronze medal winning team, played 11 regular season matches for the Spirit, starting 10, plus both postseason matches. She was voted Washington Spirit Newcomer of the Year for 2016. She recorded an assist on the Spirit’s opening goal in the semifinal to help the team qualify for its first ever NWSL Championship.
Agnew was drafted to the Spirit with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft. In January, the 21-year-old was called into her first senior Canadian National Team camp, and will be looking to earn her first cap with the senior national team in Portugal.
Upon returning from Portugal, the trio will join the Washington Spirit preseason, with the first preseason match scheduled for Saturday, March 18 against Penn State University at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The Spirit’s NWSL regular season home opener will be against North Carolina Courage on Saturday, April 15 at 7 p.m. also at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
