Washington Spirit  |   May 28, 2015

BOYDS, Md. (May 29, 2015) – The Washington Spirit (3-3-1, 10 points) arrive back home to play the Portland Thorns FC (2-2-2, 6 points) on Saturday May 30th. Last week, the Spirit suffered a 3-2 defeat to the Western New York Flash.

“I am excited we are coming home for two games starting with hosting Portland this weekend,” said head coach Mark Parsons. “The schedule has been tough and I am very proud of every member of this team and the progress we have made. Our focus is on us being the best we can be and show our fans how important their support is to us. I believe we are going to come out with a real urgency and desire to dominate this game and show we are top team.”

Earlier this month, the Spirit played an even match against the Portland Thorns FC, having seventeen shots to the Thorns fifteen shots on goal. However, two quick goals in the first ten minutes by Crystal Dunn and Francisca Ordega were not enough for the Spirit to hold on to three points. The Thorns came back and scored two unanswered goals by Mana Shim and Allie Long.

Spirit goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and Thorns goalkeeper Nadine Angerer both had five saves on the night, with an important penalty saved by Wys to keep the score at 2-2. As Angerer left for World Cup duties with the Germany national team, Michelle Betos will look for her first win as the starting goalkeeper for the Thorns.

Midfielders Angela Salem and Joanna Lohman will look to be stronger in the center of the pitch and win loose balls, allowing the Spirit to string passes together and connect in the offensive third. The attacking line will no doubt include Dunn and Christine Nairn. Both in the top three for goals scored so far in the 2015 NWSL season.

The Portland Thorns FC continue to struggle in their last two games, being shutout by both Boston Breakers and Houston Dash. Portland will be on a mission to secure three points this weekend at Maureen Hendricks Field and climb back up in the standings.

Meanwhile, the Spirit will be playing to maintain their second place ranking in the table in front of their hometown fans on Saturday night at 7 PM.
