This Saturday, the Washington Spirit will take on the Western New York Flash for the first time since May 17th. The Spirit is coming off a hard fought 3-3 tie in their last match against the Boston Breakers. In what was a hotly contested affair, filled with penalty kicks and cards, thunder, and official’s whistles, the Spirit were able to get one point, bringing their record to 7-7-2. The Flash come into the match with a 7-8-2 record. The teams are tied for 3rd place, with 23 points each.
The Spirit and the Flash have met twice before this season, splitting the series thus far. In the opening game of the year, the Flash won 3-1, behind two goals from Vicky Losada. In their last meeting in May, the Spirit came out on top with a 3-2 victory, getting two goals from Jodie Taylor. This will be the first match the Spirit will play at Sahlen’s Stadium.
The Spirit are facing a big test as their last two matches came against the Houston Dash and the Boston Breakers, who sit at the bottom of the standings. Washington took care of business, getting 4 much needed points to keep pace in the standings. The Flash will present a tougher challenge. They are on a three game winning streak, and making a hard charge for a playoff spot. They are still one game under .500 but are playing their best soccer as the summer heats up.
The Washington Spirit and the Western New York Flash, locked up in 3rd place, will meet at Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday at 7 pm.
