Nigerian national team midfielder signs two-year deal with 2029 option

Washington, D.C. (10/22/2026) – The Washington Spirit and midfielder Deborah Abiodun have agreed to a new contract, the club announced today. A valuable connector in the Spirit midfield, Abiodun inked a new two-year deal through 2028 with a 2029 mutual option.

“The Spirit has become my home over the past year and I’m thrilled to renew my commitment to DC,” said Abiodun. “I have seen a lot of growth in my game with this club and I look forward to continuing to contribute to its success over the next three seasons.”

After signing with the Spirit prior to the 2025 season, Abiodun spent the first half of the year away on loan gaining important experience as she kicked off her professional career. Washington recalled the midfielder in August 2025 and she quickly became a vital part of the club’s run to the NWSL Championship. In total, Abiodun has appeared in 21 matches for the Spirit and tallied a goal and assist for the side.

“Deb brings a very unique skillset to our midfield,” said Sporting Director James Hocken. “She brings an incredible energy off the ball and is a calming influence on it. Her development since starting on our loan pathway has been a joy to watch and we are excited to keep her in the District for the foreseeable future.”

Originally from Oyo in southwestern Nigeria, Abiodun has extensive experience with the Nigerian senior team. The midfielder made her Super Falcons debut in September 2022 and has since competed with the side at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Olympic Games. In 2025, Abiodun helped Nigeria capture the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title as the side was named continental champion for the tenth time.

Before turning pro, Abiodun played two seasons of college soccer at Pitt, where she was a standout player for the Panthers. In 34 appearances, Abiodun tallied ten goals and three assists while being named to an All-ACC team each season. In 2023, she was named to the all-conference Freshman and Third teams while she earned Second Team All-ACC honors in 2024.

The Spirit will take the pitch at Audi Field next for a Decision Day matchup with Chicago Stars FC on Sunday, November 1. Kicking off at 5 p.m. EDT, the match will be Washington’s annual Fan Appreciation Night and feature a special Trinity Rodman-designed hat giveaway.
