Kansas City, Mo. (10/25/2026) – The Washington Spirit dropped a tough road match to the Kansas City Current by a 2-1 scoreline. Forward Clara Luvanga tallied her second career NWSL goal early in the first half before the Current scored twice for a comeback win.
In the eighth minute of play, Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver made a save on a shot from Current midfielder Croix Bethune. Just four minutes later, Luvanga capitalized on a mistake by Kansas City goalkeeper Lorena in the box with a steal and shot on an empty net for the 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, however, the home side would draw level when Lo’eau LaBonta took advantage of a Spirit turnover with a shot that redirected into the back of the net. Another three minutes later, Kansas City took its first lead of the day when Vanessa DiBernardo finished a strong look in the box to make the score 2-1.
Spirit midfielder Hal Hershfelt went down with an injury on the play and had to be replaced in the 20th minute by Mélissa Bethi. Neither side managed a shot on target the rest of the first half and the teams went into the locker room with Washington trailing by a goal.
Rosemonde Kouassi subbed on in place of Sofia Cantore in the attacking third to start the second half as the Spirit searched for an equalizer. Washington managed 67 percent possession across the opening 15 minutes of the second half but was unable to put any shots on frame. In the 63rd minute, Ashley Hatch and Monique Ngock entered the match for Clara Luvanga and Leicy Santos, respectively.
Trinity Rodman made a run down the field in the 75th minute and fired a shot that just missed the top corner of the frame. Two minutes later, Rodman and Kouassi both landed shots on target that were saved by Lorena. Paige Metayer entered the match for Lucia Di Guglielmo as the Spirit worked toward an equalizer. Bethi fired a volley shot in the sixth minute of stoppage time that went just above the crossbar for Washington’s final attacking chance of the match before the final whistle.
Next up, the Spirit will return home for a Decision Day meeting with Chicago Stars FC on Sunday, November 1 as the side looks to clinch a home quarterfinal match. Kicking off at 5 p.m. EST, tickets are available at WashingtonSpirit.com/tickets.
