The Washington Spirit (1-7-3) will host third place FC Kansas City (7-4-2) on Wednesday at Maryland SoccerPlex’s Maureen Hendricks Field in a one-game home stint.
The match will complete a home-and-home regular season series between Kansas City and Washington. FCKC won the first leg 2-0 at Shawnee Mission District Stadium in Overland Park, Kan., on June 23. Lauren Cheney recorded a brace in the game, and has since continued her hot scoring pace, having surpassed Western New York’s Abby Wambach for the league lead in goals with eight.
FC Kansas City enters the match having won four of its last six games, losing only once in that stretch. Washington has lost five straight since beating Seattle on May 16, going scoreless since a four-goal outburst against the Reign.
The match will be a showing of two of the league’s top goalkeepers, as U.S. Women’s National Team teammates Ashlyn Harris and Nicole Barnhart square off for the second time this season. Barnhart’s six clean sheets are tied for the league lead, and she is deadlocked with Harris for fourth in the league in saves with 42.
Conny Pohlers is expected to make her much anticipated home debut with the Spirit after playing two road matches with the team since signing on June 11. The veteran German striker has started games against FC Kansas City and Western New York, recording one shot on goal.
Lindsay Taylor joined the Spirit this week after being acquired from Seattle in a trade in which Washington received the 23-year-old forward and a conditional fourth round pick in the 2014 NWSL College Draft in exchange for the Spirit’s second-round pick in the same draft. Taylor appeared in six NWSL regular season matches with Seattle Reign FC, starting four and scoring one goal. She will be available for action against FC Kansas City.
Spirit captain Lori Lindsey will look to extend her consecutive starts streak to 12 on Wednesday against FCKC. The 33-year-old has played every minute this season for Washington, racking up a team-high 990 minutes in 11 matches, and she is tied for the team lead in assists with two to go along with one goal.
Wednesday night will be the first match on the Spirit bench for new head coach Mark Parsons, who replaced former coach Mike Jorden on Monday. Parsons coached the Spirit Reserves to a 6-2-1 record in his time with the team this season. He also led the D.C. United Women Under-20s to the 2012 National Championship finals and previously spent six years in multiple roles at Chelsea FC in England, including time as the head coach of Chelsea Ladies Reserve.
Kickoff for Wednesday’s match is set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at https://tickets.washingtonspirit.com/smweb.
